Artist Statement

My artistic journey began in the third grade. I had a friend sitting next to me during a movie and treat day. As we penned these illustrations of fantastic imaginary characters. This friend looked at the basic and mundane figure I had put to paper and stated, “You can’t draw stick figures forever.” It ignited an artist’s flame in me. Since that fateful day I have branched into many different avenues of the arts since then. Teaching myself my artistic skills slowly and over time with the little resources available, I started to experiment with many mediums: clay, sculpture, wood, sewing and painting. I taught myself to play guitar and ukulele, how to write stories, poetry and songs. I began to temper my voice in choir and to display my performative skills on stage when I began musical theater.

When I create a work I inject the piece with energy that I want it to exude especially when it contrasts the elements of the subject matter. I am a character designer with a penchant for building narratives within each figure I make. and I ensure that when you see these images that even a stray figure within a white void can resonate and tell the viewer a story in a single image. I find that the force behind why I make art is not for recognition, fame or even monetary gain. I simply create to deliver thoughts of my own and of others to any audience with the intent to give them the sense of satisfaction seeing the work exist; to revel in the mutual yet subjective emotional connection. My personal style is “sketchy,” “messy,” “unpolished” and that is intentional. It has a hand drawn quality that differs from conventional vectorized illustrations as it gifts the piece a humanness and life. The penultimate result of viewing the works is a child-like sense of wonder and simultaneously state of content.
